Detecting bias in your own classroom


Become sensitive to the existence of assessment bias and the need to eliminate it (Popham 135)

  • Start by reviewing your own assessments from the perspectives of each individual student in your class.
  • Think about the impact that students' backgrounds will have on the way they answer your assessments.
  • Some assessments draw heavily on students' own experiences or their background knowledge, so it is necessary to choose topics or tasks that give all students an equal chance at performing.
